I am loving every moment of our trip! We’ve taken some awesome photos this week but this is one of my favorites because it sums up what we have been doing—playing, laughing, living. It’s been pure bliss in our desert oasis!
But…I will admit that I had a major hesitation sharing a photo of me in a bikini because I’ve never done this before. Then, yesterday I learned a really big lesson about self-love via my son.
Yesterday, as Landon and I were scrolling through our photos, I saw one that was not very flattering of me (in my opinion). My out loud reaction to the photo was, “Yuck!” Landon immediately asked me why I said that. He had a confused expression on his face. I said that I didn’t like that photo of me. He then said, “But mama, that is what you look like. I like this photo.” I smiled at him and told him that he was right. That is what I look like. I leaned over and gave him a hug and a kiss.
I then thought about how often I look at photos of myself and think “yuck,” and I realized it is probably more than I care to admit (sigh) even as I am able to affirm that I have a relatively healthy self-concept. That’s when I decided to stop. Stop!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past few months is that this body of mine is responsible for so many miracles every moment of every day that I should only be loving it and honoring it completely. I should only be giving my body the respect it deserves! (What a concept, right?!!)
My heart is beating. My lungs are carrying oxygen. My mind is sharp. My movements are effortless. I’m alive. I’m a miracle. This body carried my son and persevered through hours of difficult labor. This body nourished him for months. He is a miracle!!! Together, we dance and play and giggle with our miracle selves. What a true gift it is to be alive, and this week I have the awesome opportunity to be in the desert playing with my son. That’s a huge and enthusiastic, “YES!”
So, perhaps the next time you are feeling a “yuck” come on, try your best to think of yourself as the miracle of life that you are and try to give yourself an enthusiastic, “YES!”
Now, it’s time to get ready for another day of fun in the sun.
